NUS Trials on 16th, 20th Jan @NUS MPSH4

Hi,

There will be trials for the upcoming Interclub League 2009 in March (stretches till October 2009). The dates are as follows:

Dates: 16th, 20th Jan (Timing TBC.. most likely evening) (Note that scores will only be released after both sessions are completed)
Venue: MPSH 4

I will not be selecting individuals, or rather, a pair of players. (Example: If you're selected, your partner will also be selected) Depending on the number of players, I will choose between 12-16 to play for NUS Team A and Team B (6-8 players each). The rest will be Team C. These players will be undergoing COMPULSORY trainings by our newly hired coach-cum-alumni, Mr. Zhang Yukun. Those who are not selected are invited to join the training. :)

The selection is done based on the average results of both duplicates. On the basis that you cannot attend one of them, the average results of the session's duplicates will be given as your score. Those who can't make it for both sessions, unless you have a very valid reason not to come, then I will deal with it case-by-case.From now, please find a partner and START TRAINING!

Anything problems do look for me or you can email me at nuscontractbridge@gmail.com

Thanks.

Regards,
Hanxing

Joke of the Week

Exams is ending soon! Hang in there!

A contestant in a tournament suddenly slumped down in his chair. A doctor was hastily summoned. He took the stricken man's pulse and noted that it was steady and firm. Obviously it was no heart attack.

From the victim's white face and clammy hands the doctor surmised that this was a case of shock. A bridge player himself, he picked up the victim's cards and studied them. He then turned to the others at the table.

"Now let me have a review of the bidding," he requested.

Joke of the Week

Sorry this week's pretty late. So here goes:

The expert was playing a tough hand in a tournament. He led a card from Dummy and the innocent-looking girl on his right went into a long huddle before following suit. When declarer led the suit again the girl showed out.

Annoyed, the expert said, "What was all that hesitation about? You had a singleton."

"Yes," said Miss Innocence, smiling. "But it was tricky, wasn't it?"

Duplicates Suspended Until Further Notice

Hi people,

NUS Contract Bridge will not be conducting any duplicates until further notice due to the upcoming final examinations.

Duplicates will resume at a given date.

Please refer to the SCBA website for other venues for duplicates until then.

Joke of the Week

They were looking at the results after finishing their game, to compare it with the others on the Travelling Score Sheet. "This is down one" ; "That one is down two" ; and one of them pointed another result; "Oooo, this one is the Titanic."

Joke of the Week

One member of a pair was heavily criticising the other one without stopping. The 3rd person at the table took an "Extra Strong Mint" from his pocket, gave it to this person, said "Have a mint", and turned to the others "Let's keep his mouth busy."

Train Track and Children

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track.

The train came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and saved most of the kids

However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make...

Analyse the situation...

Think and reflect...

Decided your answer!!!!...

Now ... go ahead...

...

...

Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. To save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally.

But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.

This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are.

The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.

To make the proper decision is not try to change the course of the train because the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.

If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe.

If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

'Remember that what's right isn't always popular... and what's popular isn't always right.'

Everybody makes mistakes; that's why they put erasers on pencils

9th Sept

Tomorrow raist shall give a short lecture on preempts, basic defensive signals and leads, and responses over 2C openings for the freshmen.

That will be your final lesson before you are roughly able to just have fun playing and learn the more advanced stuff as you go along declarer play is one huge topic by itself and raist has already went through the relay basic stuff like card combination, ruffing and establishing long suits the rest you can pick up slowly.

And that concludes the end of the 4 part lessons of the Beginners Course. Hope the food and drinks was good enough. >.<

Anyway, lesson plan for next Tuesday is currently still in preparation and will be updated to everyone once it's confirmed.

26th August

Hey guys,

Sorry that I was too busy last night to set any boards for hand review. The sandwiches took too much time. And I forgot to take photos! :(

In any cases, hope you guys have fun (no one kept the chocolates for me.. :( i iz sad..) and see you guys for the last episode of the Beginner's Course. After that, you guys will get a imaginary "Stamp of Approval". Haha!

Your path has just began. Seniors will keep guiding you, so don't worry.

Bridge Beginners' Course

Bridge

Welcome to NUS Bridge Club

Hi to whoever is reading this site now. This is a test post for the National University of Singapore (NUS) Bridge Club. I will be updating the website whenever I can and spread the world of bridge to all NUS students.

Please feel free to drop me an email at hanxing@nus.edu.sg should you have any questions regarding Contract Bridge.

We usually will have duplicate session at NUS Multi Purpose Sports Hall 4 (MPSH4) every Tuesday at 7pm. Please drop me a email if you are interested to play. We usually do not conduct weekly duplicates during school holidays (May - Jul) unless specified, so do send me an email in advance so I can inform you if the session is on.

Please feel free to drop any comments should you have any ideas to improve the club. All your feedbacks will be greatly appreciated.

More updates to come.

Regards,
Hanxing aka sweatstar (Bridge Base Online nick)
